Adam Lanza Identified as Gunman in Connecticut Shooting

As authorities continue to investigate Friday's horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., details are beginning to emerge about the alleged gunman.

A law enforcement official tells the Associated Press that the shooter has been identified as 20-year-old Adam Lanza.

There were conflicting reports about whether his mother, Nancy Lanza, had a connection to the school. She was variously identified as a kindergarten teacher, substitute teacher, employee and having no ties to school at all.

Nancy Lanza was found dead at her son's residence, CNN reports.

Although Lanza wasn't named during a Friday afternoon press conference, Connecticut State Police spokesman Lt. Paul Vance told reporters, "The shooter is deceased inside the building."

Vance put the death toll at 28 total: 20 children, six adults, the gunman and his mother.

Lanza's brother, Ryan, and their father was taken into custody for questioning by police in New Jersey, but were not named as suspects.
